The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru, raised in around 20% new oak, has an open and more airy bouquet compared to the Grands Montagne. Yet with aeration it manifests subtle aromas of stem ginger and even a hint of fresh rhubarb. The palate is beautifully balanced with a perfect line of acidity, wonderful poise and subtle apricot, orange pith and saline notes toward the pixelated finish. If you can’t afford the red La Romanée, choose this white alternative. - VM

Rich primrose colour, some oak evident on the nose along with the complexity of full lees contact and a wonderful weight on the fruit. Early days yet and it is hard to sort out all these dimensions accurately. On the second half of the palate, you rediscover the real wine with energy and balance and a really harmonious thread. - JM
